This rose is about as black as I have ever seen

This black rose is 5 days old and the shape has not changed at all. Looks like it will just freeze in this state. This will be a beautiful rose once the stripes have spread out through the bloom.

  3. Hi Dave, I just discovered your blog! I can't believe that you have created all these extremely beautiful roses. The very dark first one is the darkest rose that I have ever seen. Have you experience if it is prone to petal crisping in hot sun? I also really love the second one. Wonderful coloration! Are you intending to release these roses into commerce?

  4. Christina, I just uploaded an update on the black rose. The roses that I am breeding are very heat tolerant. Here in California it can get very hot during the summer. Burning up in the heat has been a torn in my side on roses like sheilas perfume so I breed a rose that looks similar to it and tolerates the heat very well. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.208111 Very rarely will I keep a rose that doesnt have very good "substance" pedal thickness, heat tolerance. I am currently testing some of these roses with places like Star Roses so we will see. If they will not release them, then I will release through other smaller outlets eventually.

  5. Hi Dave--I just found you too (through Dave Sproul's blog comments). I live in the CA north valley, and temps soar here too--a week ago it was near 110 for a few days! Many of my roses crisp and turn brown in temps over 90 or 95 and I would love to get my hands on some of your unique, heat tolerant roses. I am especially enthralled with the dark on dark stripes. I will be following you and will be first to order if some of these gorgeous beauties become available to purchase. Congratulations on your marvelous creations!

  6. Thank you Sally. Jim Sproul is a good guy and has helped me understand hybridizing on a deeper level. I love visiting his blog page. Your climate is exactly why I am breeding these roses. Black magic and black baccara are two roses I love working with. One: they have great form, two they have great heat tolerance and I love the dark reds. Having them with stripes seemed like the logical next step. I am using some of Jims disease resistant roses to breed with, so hopefully I will get a black magic or baccara that is disease resistant some day. If Star decides to not go with any of the roses I have shown them I will start selling them myself.
